Ford took the right path that wound past the garage so he wouldn’t pass anyone. The sound of gurgling water lured him from the distance, and he calculated he’d meet Patricia by the lake, betting she’d stop by the carved timber benches Jay had specially made.

He walked with his head up, stance confident even though his gut clenched with nerves. So much depended on this supposed random meetup, but Tessa had convinced him if he intrigued Patricia enough, this could be a new beginning.

His nostrils flared when he spotted her standing in front of a small clearing, staring at the lake as if it held all the answers. Her slender arms were crossed in front of her chest, face tilted slightly up, shiny hair pulled back from her face, a patrician profile so beautiful she seemed almost unreal.

Ford’s heart jumped. A twig crunched under his feet as he approached. “Nature walk?” he asked, an easy smile on his face.

She turned, and the look on her face stopped his breath. It was different from the other times. Pleasure lit her eyes, an eagerness she’d never shown before in his presence. “Ford. I didn’t hear you.” A soft laugh escaped her plump lips. “Just taking a break. Crowds sometimes give me anxiety.”

He cut off his instinct to comfort her by sharing his own stories of anxiety to make her feel better. Instead, he kept his distance and slowly nodded. “Never knew that about you. Guess most of us wear masks.”

“Not you.” She shifted her feet, her gaze intent. “You always seem open. Not afraid to share who you are with people. It’s one of the things I like most about you.”

He refused to shrug or explain, no matter how badly he wanted to. Ford kept to his part and hoped Tessa wasn’t wrong. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Patricia.” He locked his gaze on hers and refused to look away. Tapping into all the pent-up sexual energy he’d banked for two years, he let it go and felt the air practically charge. “We never got that chance. But maybe that’s for the best.”

She blinked, then moved, closing the distance. “You think? Because of Tessa, right? You two seem very close.”

“She’s an amazing woman,” he said. Patricia waited for more, but he didn’t explain further.

“She is. It’s hard not to admire her.”

Falling deeper into his part, he arched his brow and dropped his voice. “I’m glad you approve.” He deliberately raked his gaze up and down her body, taking his time. “And I’m glad Erik was able to help you get over your heartbreak. You need a man who knows what he wants.”

Her tongue wet her lips, and her eyes darkened. Yep, she definitely likes a man who takes charge. How’d he never catch that before? Tessa was a genius.

“Erik is just a friend,” Patricia said slowly.

“Like us?” His lip lifted, as if amused by her confession.

Her laugh tinkled like wind chimes, and a pretty blush stained her cheeks. “Yeah, like us.
